Mr. Whitsett started his legal career representing physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals at a Long Island, New York medical malpractice firm. Mr. Whitsett’s clients included orthopedists, obstetricians, and internists who were the subject of professional malpractice. Thereafter, Mr. Whitsett was associated with a prominent Manhattan trial attorney in where he represented personal injury and medical malpractice plaintiffs in state court and represented plaintiffs Federal civil rights cases arising out of police brutality and wrongful arrest incidents. As an associate attorney with Fixler & LaGattuta, LLP, Mr. Whitsett represents individuals, property owners, and businesses in personal injury, property damage, and insurance coverage cases. He regularly litigates cases involving insurance coverage disputes, construction accidents, automobile accidents, accidents on public and private property, as well has high-exposure water damage and automobile damage claims.
Mr. Whitsett also specializes in representing candidates for the New York State Legislature, New York City Council, and other local offices in election law and campaign finance matters. He has successfully defended political candidates (including a sitting member of the New York Assembly) against administrative proceedings by the New York City Department of Sanitation related to mass distribution of campaign literature and posters. He regularly provides counseling to small business owners with respect to general contracting matters, creditor claims, and New York City Administrative Code violations.
Mr. Whitsett is on a panel of attorneys certified by the New York State Office of Court Administration to serve as a Court-Appointed referee in commercial and residential foreclosure cases. As a Court Referee, he oversees the sale and transfer of distressed properties. Mr. Whitsett is also on a panel of attorneys qualified to serve as a Court-Appointed fiduciary in estate matters brought in New York Surrogate’s Court and typically serves in Queens County, New York, representing incapacitated or missing individuals with respect to contested wills, estate accounting proceedings, and proceedings to distribute the assets of individuals who die intestate.
Mr. Whitsett is active in Queens, New York civic affairs and currently serves as an executive officer of Queens Community Planning Board 9. Mr. Whitsett is also a member of the Richmond Hill Historic Society and several local political organizations. Prior to attending law school, Mr. Whitsett worked in the New York State Senate, New York City Comptroller’s Office, and served as an aide to a presidential candidate and numerous candidates for state and local office.
